When we’re stressed, we tend to become more stressed. That’s because when we’re rushed and harried, we cut corners. We don’t take the time to do the little things that, though not difficult or time-consuming themselves, can end up saving enormous amounts of time and trouble. For example, buying stamps isn’t stressful, and buying a roll of stamps isn’t any more stressful than buying twenty stamps, but realizing that you’ve run out of stamps when you’ve waited to the last possible day to pay your bills is STRESSFUL. And it seems to be a natural law that every car’s gas gauge hits “Empty” at the moment of maximum inconvenience.

These are troubling times, but times for reflection on what is important in life. Realize what is important in your life. Take time for the little things in life to relieve unneeded stress and plan for the unexpected.

These tasks don’t seem particularly important, and they’re easy to skip when you’re rushed, but if neglected, they can snowball into major stress. So, if you feel like your stress level is high, try to tick off some items on this list. A little effort now means a lot less stress, later.

Go to bed thirty minutes earlier than usual.

Get up twenty minutes earlier than usual.

Before you go to sleep, prepare for the morning.

Bring a hat and an umbrella.

Don’t wear tight clothes or uncomfortable shoes.

Make a list.

Listen to a favorite song.

Keep extra cash and stamps in the house.

Be polite and be fair.

Laugh out loud.

Have a good book to read.

Keep an extra set of keys.

Exercise.

Always keep your passport in the same place.

Throw something away.

Don’t say mean things about other people.

Put a bandaid in your wallet.

Keep gas in the car.

As a kid, I was puzzled by the meaning of the old saying, “A stitch in time saves nine.” Now I know what it means. And it’s a very sensible saying. It means that if you make one stitch when it’s needed, you’ll save yourself the trouble of having to make nine stitches later. Similarly, one of the best ways to lower the stress level in your life is to discipline yourself to do the little things that will help keep stress at bay.

Locate your desk so that you don’t face the DOOR — this will keep you from catching people’s eye and lessen daily interruptions.

Keep MOTION in mind — if you are doing a lot of walking, bending, or stretching during the day, you need to rethink your space.

Adding a HUTCH to your desk can create a ton of great storage space for books, manuals, supplies, small equipment, and other items you always need at hand.

Avoid having too many PERSONAL items — photos, knick-knacks, plants — cluttering up your immediate work area.

Make sure you have plenty of DRAWERS near your desk — for supplies, small equipment, paper products — whatever small items you use regularly.

Take time each day to CLEAR your desk before leaving work — you’ll start the next day in a much better frame of mind.

‘If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.’

Getting organized requires that you STOP doing things that are causing clutter, wasting time and hurting your chances of reaching your goals. It also requires you to START doing things that eliminate clutter, increase your productivity and give you the best chances for achieving the things you want in life. Here are just a few simple formulas to help you get started:

1. STOP leaving papers and other stuff on tables, desks and countertops. The more things you leave laying around, the quicker the clutter will build.

START putting things away when you’re done using them. It only takes a second to put something away, but if you let it build into a mountain of clutter, it could take hours, weeks or months to get it back under control.

2. STOP trying to remember everything in your head. It’s incredibly easy to forget something important that needs to get done, especially if you’re a busy person with lots of responsibilities.

START writing things down. Jot important dates and events in your calendar. Make written lists of tasks to be done and items to be remembered. Get your great ideas down on paper.

3. STOP writing on tiny scraps of paper and sticky notes. There’s a good chance that tiny scraps will make their way under larger papers, never to be found again.

START writing things down in an organizer, so your notes are in one place, and easily accessible when you need them.

4. STOP trying to get a million things done at once. You’ll get overwhelmed, and there’s a good chance that little will be accomplished.

START making lists and determining how many projects you can realistically complete in any given day. Write everything to be done on a Master List. Each day, transfer 3-4 items from your Master List to your Daily To Do list. Work on those items all the way through to completion. Start over the next day. You’ll know whether you had too many or too few items on your To Do List, by what you were actually able to accomplish. If you didn’t complete everything, put less items on your To Do List tomorrow. If you completed everything with time to spare, put a few more items on your To Do list tomorrow.

5. STOP saying that you CAN’T get organized. Taking this negative approach will almost always result in failure. Also, stop beating yourself up for being disorganized.

START saying you CAN get organized. Tackling your organizing problems one small step at a time, and having patience with yourself, will result in success. Reward yourself for every accomplishment you make–no matter how small. Call My Custom Closet today (610)831-8787 we can help!!

So, now that I’m all settled into my new closet, I’m finding neat things about the closet systems every day. Last week I learned that the closet doesn’t have to stay the way it was originally installed. The beautiful thing about my new closet is the fact that I can customize it to my own specifications at any time. A few of the sections are the same width, which means that the shelves are interchangeable. How cool is that? So what we did to accommodate my dresses is removing a shelf above a lower hanging section and moving the rod up 5-6 inches. Voila! Now my dresses can breathe and are not grazing the floor. The removed shelf was inserted on the other side of the closet to add more shelving space for my gym clothes, tank tops, jammers, etc.

These modifications only took about 5 minutes but they will make my life a lot easier every day when I get ready for work. Prior to me using a custom closet from My Custom Closet I never knew the benefits. Now that I have it, I can’t live without it. When we move, and we are looking at moving, I will be sure to get my closets done by My Custom Closet again.

I’m still dreaming about the drawer dividers… a simple tool to organize a drawer that I would have never thought existed until I started working with My Custom Closet. I also love the Valet Rod. Before I go to bed, I hang up my outfit on the valet rod for the next day. It allows me the opportunity to step back and see the whole outfit while I’m still awake. I’m not much of morning person! So if you are tired of the frustration you feel in the morning trying to get everything together, give My Custom Closet a call. There is a comfortable calm when there is a place for everything and everything is in its place.
