Sail away from stress
Take time for the little things in life
When we’re stressed, we tend to become more stressed. That’s because when we’re rushed and harried, we cut corners. We don’t take the time to do the little things that, though not difficult or time-consuming themselves, can end up saving enormous amounts of time and trouble. For example, buying stamps isn’t stressful, and buying a roll of stamps isn’t any more stressful than buying twenty stamps, but realizing that you’ve run out of stamps when you’ve waited to the last possible day to pay your bills is STRESSFUL. And it seems to be a natural law that every car’s gas gauge hits “Empty” at the moment of maximum inconvenience.
These are troubling times, but times for reflection on what is important in life. Realize what is important in your life. Take time for the little things in life to relieve unneeded stress and plan for the unexpected.
Keep Stress at Bay
A little effort now means less stress later
These tasks don’t seem particularly important, and they’re easy to skip when you’re rushed, but if neglected, they can snowball into major stress. So, if you feel like your stress level is high, try to tick off some items on this list. A little effort now means a lot less stress, later.
A Stitch in Time Saves Nine
Forethought can take you a long way
As a kid, I was puzzled by the meaning of the old saying, “A stitch in time saves nine.” Now I know what it means. And it’s a very sensible saying. It means that if you make one stitch when it’s needed, you’ll save yourself the trouble of having to make nine stitches later. Similarly, one of the best ways to lower the stress level in your life is to discipline yourself to do the little things that will help keep stress at bay.
Rethink your Office Space in 8 Steps
- “L” and “U” shaped desks offer the most efficient work SPACES — offering plenty of room to maneuver on all sides of you.
- Store all of your EQUIPMENT — phone, computer, etc. — on one “wing” of your desk and leave the other part(s) free to spread out on while you work.
- Locate your desk so that you don’t face the DOOR — this will keep you from catching people’s eye and lessen daily interruptions.
- Keep MOTION in mind — if you are doing a lot of walking, bending, or stretching during the day, you need to rethink your space.
- Adding a HUTCH to your desk can create a ton of great storage space for books, manuals, supplies, small equipment, and other items you always need at hand.
- Avoid having too many PERSONAL items — photos, knick-knacks, plants — cluttering up your immediate work area.
- Make sure you have plenty of DRAWERS near your desk — for supplies, small equipment, paper products — whatever small items you use regularly.
- Take time each day to CLEAR your desk before leaving work — you’ll start the next day in a much better frame of mind.

Closet “Extras” I Keep Discovering
So, now that I’m all settled into my new closet, I’m finding neat things about the closet systems every day. Last week I learned that the closet doesn’t have to stay the way it was originally installed. The beautiful thing about my new closet is the fact that I can customize it to my own specifications at any time. A few of the sections are the same width, which means that the shelves are interchangeable. How cool is that? So what we did to accommodate my dresses is removing a shelf above a lower hanging section and moving the rod up 5-6 inches. Voila! Now my dresses can breathe and are not grazing the floor. The removed shelf was inserted on the other side of the closet to add more shelving space for my gym clothes, tank tops, jammers, etc.
